16 megapixels will be the norm for smartphones? - Eight megapixels seems to be enough for the upper segment of the smartphone market (for example, Samsung Galaxy S3 and iPhone 4S), plus a 12-megapixel (Sony XperiaS) and one or two 16-megapixel (HTC Titan II).
But now things can change, a company called OmniVision Technologies, which manufactures sensors for mobile phone cameras, tablets and video equipment, has released a new 16-megapixel chip. OV16825 can take pictures with full resolution of 16 megapixels and can record video at 30 frames per second in the format 4608 x 3456.
In the video with a resolution of 3840 x2160 frame rate increases to 60 FPS, and 1080p HD video format recorded at 60 frames per second with the additional pixels for electronic image stabilization (EIS)!
The sensor is fully programmable and handset manufacturers will be able to use the built-in image processing, including processing of defective pixels and noise reduction, image scaling, frame rate, shutter speedand gain.
Serial production of the sensor to begin in the 4th quarter of this year, that is the end of the year we may see the first 16-megapixel smartphone!
